Never Ending Honeymoon | Borough Markets

The area of Borough, south of the Thames River near London Bridge, has been associated with food markets for over 1000 years. According to its own website (http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk), the Borough Market started with traders selling fish, vegetables, livestock and grain in 1014. Today the Borough Market consists of over 100 stalls laden with organic fruit and veg, cheese, wines, ciders, meat, poultry, seafood and baked goods from a variety of British and international producers.

The quality of the food is high and the Market constantly promoted as the place to buy gourmet produce in London by many chefs and cooks from around the world. The traders passionately sell a lot of their own produce and Demonstration Kitchens and cooking schools are frequent public events for those that are keen.

The Borough Market encompasses the Jubilee Market, New Market and Green Market, which spread out under the train lines between the Southwark Cathedral, Stoney Street and Borough High Street. The Market is framed by a variety of English pubs, wine bars, cafes and restaurants that promote a bubbly and stylish backdrop to its friendly and vibrant atmosphere. For a quick bite to eat you can grab a cheese toastie or paella from the stalls inside the Market. However, for a sit down meal try the produce at Black & Blue, some amazing seafood at Fish! or Applebees Fish, or some oysters and delicious wine at Wright Brothers. There is also The Posh Banger Brothers for some authentic sausages, a sushi bar, or for something a little sweet, check out chocolatier The Rabot Estate.

On our recent trip there we sampled the authentic French cheese, pick out a tasty piece of squid and get some advice from the butcher about cooking our first piece of venison. We returned home weighed down by bags of organic (and cheap) veggies, pre-prepared stuffed chicken wrapped and dressed, and a selection of sea food that we had been craving since leaving home many months ago.
